How to Join — Officer
USAFA Cadets
Air Force Academy cadets can apply to any of the three AFSPECWAR officer career fields (STO, CRO, TACPO). The application and selection process is the same across all backgrounds, with a few USAFA-specific opportunities and requirements noted below.
USAFA Timeline
Freshman Year
Join the Special Warfare Club for regular training led by a T3i coach. Apply to the Special Warfare Orientation Course to get early exposure to the career fields and training pipeline.
Sophomore Year
Continue training with the SW Club. Focus on building your physical fitness and leadership experience.
Junior Year
You can assess as early as your junior year— submit your Phase I package.
Senior Year
Senior cadets can also assess.
Casual Lieutenant Program
If you are not selected as a cadet, apply for the Casual Lieutenant program during your senior year. After commissioning, you remain on campus for up to six months to train full-time and prepare for the fall Phase II screener.
Application Notes
- —Include a complete O-299 (with comments, signed by your AOC) in place of standard performance reports. For CRO, also submit an AF Form 422 from the USAFA Cadet Standards Clinic.
- —Your AOC can serve as your PT test administrator.
- —If you do not have access to a .mil or .gov email, have an active duty leader submit your application on your behalf.
- —Highlight leadership experiences and participation in SW Club or the Orientation Course on your resume.
